“This afternoon, I visited Marilyn Narey’s studio at Radiant Hall in McKees Rocks. After a career as a teacher, university professor, and author of scholarly books, Marilyn transitioned to a full-time studio practice in 2023. Her work spans drawing, writing, painting, and sculpture, all deeply informed by her academic background. Central to her practice is the dialogical process, with each piece’s form and medium emerging through introspection and experimentation around a conceptual idea.
Marilyn often works with pulped and shredded paper, thread, and reclaimed needlework, using these materials to create richly layered surfaces. In several series, she incorporates text from her own poetry into the layers, adding another dimension to her work. She is currently exploring ways to integrate audio elements into her visual pieces, further expanding her artistic practice.”
