βThe threads and papers featured in my work are at once tangible and metaphorical. In a physical sense, thread can become paper and paper can become thread. Both threads and paper can be fragile and vulnerable to the environment, yet both have the capacity for great strength and flexibility.β
Marilyn Narey Transdisciplinary Artist
βMy paperworks are intimate and intricate, whether hung on the wall, held in hand, or embracing the body in a sculptural space. The versatility of paper affords a wide range of forms through which my conceptual ideas become tangible multisensory experiences. As a transdisciplinary artist, working in pulp and paper frees me from disciplinary structures. I create layered surfaces and sculptural forms for integration of my poetry and varied visual art media. I embed threads and reclaimed needlework in the paper pulp and stitch these together in all manner of constructions.
Paperworks allows me to create both real and illusury spaces through both material properties of varied media and through the science of optics and perception: compositions that are often abstract and sometimes, super-real. With simple technology of QR codes that bring sound to the experience, my poetry can be heard as well as read and enhanced with other audio features in the context of the provocative visual compositions. Sizes can range from handheld to large scale 3-D pieces that envelop the viewer or drift above. Within this transdisciplinary framework the works become accessible on multiple levels of sensory and intellectual engagement, and potentially draw a broader audience into dialogue with my work.β
